Body Mass Index as a Parameter of Running Speed
Views: 2,923Downloads: 2,546Speed is determined by several factors such as anatomical and physiological factors. Body Mass Index (BMI) is one of an indicator from anthropometric measurement that is relevant to distinguish the capacity and performance of athletes. The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between BMI and running speed. It was an observational research with cross-sectional design of 35 students of Athlete High School in Palembang. students. The primary data was taken from anthropometric measurements (stature meters, weight scales, meters) and assessment of 50 meters running speed tests. Data analysis was executed by using Pearson or Spearman correlation test in SPSS. The BMI of subjects varied from 17.05 to 27.12 with mean 21.48. The running speed of subjects varied from 5.67 to 8.17 m/s, with an average of 6.78 m/s. The bivariate analysis showed that there was a weak negative correlation between BMI and running speed (r = -0160). There was a weak negative correlation between BMI and running speed (r = -0160). A negative correlation means that the greater BMI then the less time it takes to run at a distance of 50 meters, in other words, the better performance of athletes.

A Hospital-Based Study: Interventions for Patients with Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) in National Reference Hospital, South Sumatera Region, Indonesia

Background. Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) is a term used to describe a congenital condition where sex chromosomes, gonads, and or anatomy of a person are atypical. It is estimated to affect 1:4,500 people worlwide with varied clinical findings, hence the integrated and diverse interventions.
Objective. This study wished to observe the many interventions DSD patients received in Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Hospital as one of the national reference hospitals in Indonesia for South Sumatera region.
Methods. Medical records of 173 patients with clinical findings in accordance with DSD spectrum during 2013-2017 was observed in order to identify both surgical and medical interventions applied.
Results. Sixty two patients were diagnosed of having hypospadias (35.84%), making it the most common clinical finding among DSD patients in this hospital. Surgical intervention was the most favored intervention, with 155 patients (89.6%) underwent various surgeries, ranging from urethroplasty to vaginoplasty and many more. Five patients(2.9%) were treated with either hydrocortisone and florinef, or both. One patient diagnosed with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) had both surgical and medical intervention.
Conclusion. DSD gives a wide phenotypic spectrum, making its management both challenging and complicated. Surgical, medical, and or a combination of both are the indispensable interventions when dealing with DSD patients. Study focusing on psychological intervention for DSD patients is further needed.

Antibacterial Activity of Cinnamon Extract (Cinnamomum burmannii) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli In Vitro

Infectious disease is one of the most common diseases in the world. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli are two common causes of infection and are resistant to many antibiotics, so the new agents are needed to overcome antibiotic resistance. Cinnamon is often used as a preservative because it has antibacterial activity. Cinnamomum burmannii is kind of native cinnamon from Indonesia. The antimicrobial active compounds cinnamaldehyde and eugenol are the main reasons for its antibacterial activity. This study observed the efficacy of the cinnamon extract (Cinnamomum burmannii) as antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. An experimental study, in vitro using Post-test Only Control Group Designed, has been done in Microbiology and Biotechnology Laboratory of Medical Faculty of Sriwijaya University. Cinnamon was extracted, then tested for its antibacterial activity using well diffusion and serial dilution to determine diameter of inhibition zone and minimum bactericidal concentration. Phytochemical tests were also conducted to determine the antibacterial compounds of cinnamon extract. Ethanol extract of cinnamon was able to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus with MBC 5% and inihibitory zone 6,84±0,68 mm and Escherichia coli with MBC 10% and inhibitory zone 5,69±0,69 mm. Cinnamon extract which has the greatest effectiveness is concentration of 40% with inhibition zone 15,69±0,80 mm (Staphylococcus aureus) and 9,63±0,59 mm (Escherichia coli). This ability is due to the antibacterial compounds as evidenced by positive results in various phytochemical tests. Cinnamon extract is effective as antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in vitro.

Antibacterial Efficacy of Aloe vera Sap Against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli

Aloe vera is a plant that has been used as an alternative drug. This plant contains various compounds, like anthraquinone, saponin, flavonoid, alkaloid, and tannin that has an antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Both of it were responsible for the infection incident. This study aims to determine the efficacy of Aloe vera sap as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
Methods
An experimental study, in vitro using post-test only control group design, has been done at laboratory of Medical Faculty of Sriwijaya University, by examining the antibacterial activity of Aloe vera sap in five different concentration (5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, dan 80%) using well diffusion and solid dillusion method to determine the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). And then continued with the phytocemical screening to determine the compound inside the Aloe vera sap.
Results
Aloe vera sap were able to kill Staphylococcus aureus at 5% and Eshcerichia coli at 80%. Compatibility test showed that Aloe vera sap with concentration of 10%, 20%, 40%, and 80% are compatible with amoxicillin, therefore 80% is compatible with cefotaxime. This ability due to the compound that it contains, which is alkaloid, flavonoid, tannin, quinone, and saponin.
Conclusion
Aloe vera sap is effective as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Biomolecular Aspects of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a common psychiatric disorder, which is characterized by severe distortion of reality; disturbances in thoughts, feelings and behavior; according to DSM V is a disorder form deviations fundamentals and characteristics of thought and perception, and by the innapropriate or blunted affect. The influence of genetics is believed to have a role in psychiatric disorders, especially if the disorder has occurred in young adults or adolescents. The pathophysiology of schizophrenia is closely related to disorders of the biomolecular aspects of the central nervous system. Dopamine activity in the striatal area and prefrontal cortex is a mechanism believed to be the cause of the emergence of positive and negative symptoms in schizophrenia. Meanwhile, neuronal cell apoptosis and increased oxidants, especially in the basal ganglia and prefrontal cortex areas cause worsening of negative symptoms experienced by schizophrenic patients.
